Interesting to see some of the titles which are appearing. I'm rather baffled by the popularity of Ivanhoe by several posters (of course I can understand that Ivanhoe had to include the title!). Although the film is enjoyable enough, and a cut above most '50s custumers, I have never considered it as anything but a routine time-pleaser. Also, for me, it is fatally flawed with the casting of Robert Taylor - who is far too old and stolid for the part.

Yes, even Avie L. who regards it as his favourite film is reluctant to call it 'great' when he's being objective.  It's just that the film has so many excellent production values ... and the music of course.  Every costume, every link of armour, every set is totally authentic, and has been quoted as such by experts ... except for the metal shields for that 'clanging' effect!  It has a 'mediaeval naive' quality about it too that has charm, but it is a big compromise on Walter Scott's big conception.

The Four Feathers
The Thief of Baghdad
Five Graves to Cairo
Double Indemnity
The Lost Weekend
The Killers
Brute Force
Julius Caesar
Ben-Hur
Providence

But many goodies are obscured by low exposure.  ('Lydia' has been posted in its entirety by someone on YouTube by the way recently).  How many people regard 'So Proudly We Hail' for example?  And there's 'Lady Hamilton'.  Many of the '40s pieces seem to be very competent, not striving beyond their genres.  With a 'dream factory' you can do that: every film doesn't have to strive for complete uniqueness.
