Well, I suppose it was inevitable with the release of the first major orchestral Zador disc to appear in many a year; the old curiosity pop's up: just how much did he have to do in Rozsa's film scores; was it - as MR always maintained - just a simple matter of basic "filling out" orchestration from a pretty strict and concise short score, with no room for any elaboration or using any of Zador's own ideas....... OR was there any room for his own creativity to be allowed by the composer to actually alter (improve?) his original intentions?
Much as Goldsmith after him always seemed to insist Messrs Sandy Courage and Arthur Morton could never have the chance to change any of his music by their orchestrations, so we always have presumed similarly with Rozsa with Zador; but, will we ever know for sure? One presumes each man got on well enough for much of the working relationship, and certainly in the results to be heard Zador achieved just what was required, much as the later scores were also successfully completed with Chris Palmer's assistance. However, maybe towards the end of hs film scoring life, Rozsa just might have relied on Palmer a tad more than he did in earlier years; maybe he welcomed a little more intervention and some new ideas.......in other words, more of a collaboration, and no worse for that. But that is merely my own conjecture, and, much as in those Polydor (and other) suites, who knows how much CP was asked to assist in order to have them ready for the recording sessions.
I have heard a few of Zador's concert works as recorded much earlier on LPs; frankly, I did not care for them. However, I will gladly buy and listen carefully to this new CD in the hope that they sound fresh and maybe disprove my earlier doubts. He interests me - not just for his close connection with MR - and I greatly welcome this and subsequent releases in the series.
