Yes, this sort of "live with film" presentation drives me batty. The 2007 QUO VADIS presentation in Budapest was along the same lines. And I recall a "Herrmann-Hitchcock" tribute with the NY Philharmonic where random images of things like the PSYCHO murder were projected during VERTIGO love scenes and so forth. Since the art of film music consists precisely of finding the appropriate marriage of image and sound, these presentations deliberately desecrate the composers' achievements.

These things should not be confused with the BEN-HUR suite (Parade-Nativity-Burning Desert-Naval Battle) that has been performed (expensively) by a number of orchestras. This suite attempts to replicate the original experience, with much of the nonmusical sound removed.
