Filmmakers were not the only exiles and émigrés that made Los Angeles their home. Many of Europe’s top composers left under similar circumstances. Steven Ovitsky, Director of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, will focus on three who came and composed for films: Max Steiner, Franz Waxman and Miklos Rozsa.
If their names aren’t familiar, their music is. Steiner, who was born in Vienna, composed the music for such film favorites as Casablanca and Gone with the Wind. Rozsa’s music can be heard in two of the film’s we’re screening, and Franz Waxman is the composer of the music for Rebecca, Sunset Boulevard, and many more. Ovitsky’s talk is illustrated with film clips and the scores the composers wrote.
