I can't agree that the S&G love themes surpass their biblical predecessors. They are wonderful -- and wonderfully contrasted -- melodies. Cool and regal for Lot-Ildith, hot and Hebraic for the other one. But very little in Rozsa surpasses the purity of the Lygia theme in my book. Whether to call it a "love theme" is another matter. Who loves whom? You can't say that Marcus loves Lygia. Through most of the film his attitude approximates that of what we would today call a rapist. And if Lygia feels anything for the guy, it can only be at a kind of hormonal level, which is certainly not what the music suggests. Well, it's best not to apply modern standards or even to treat QV as serious dramaturgy.
As for SODOM, I'll say this: If I wanted to program a single short work that would demonstrate the range and power of MR's film music, this would be it. The JC overture might be a second choice, but it lacks the lyric contrast of the love music in the center of the S&G Overture. Take the Overture, the exquisite "River" pastorale, and maybe a better-edited finale, and you'd have a perfect suite. The late Mr. Wishart made a start when he dusted off the Overture for Silva. Maybe it's time for somebody to take the next step.
