As promised, heres my take on compiling the ultimate 2 CD-R compilation of SODOM AND GOMORRAH from the BMG and Digitmovies discs. I did try applying a slight trebling down of some of the cues, but soon abandoned any equalization at source except for a few select moments where noted below. Use your receiver treble control or equalizer instead.
DISC 1
1. Overture [BMG disc] This is as perfect as it gets. The big powerful Hebrew theme, with its seductively magical crashing brass-and-cymbals moment at the 1:36 mark (with lesser ones at 3:06 and 4:05) is unlike any other in the whole Rózsa canon. Pure musical sorcery!
2. Prelude [Digitmovies disc] This has a horrible fade-out at the end, and the prologue which follows in the film is full of sound effects and narration, and therefore unusable. My solution was to take the exposed harp-figure ostinato from 1:23:606 to 1:25:442, and loop it several times, then overlay the entire looped portion at the 2:15:520 mark. Save the results and go back do a proper slow linear fade-out of the looped portion. The result is that the original fade-out dissolves into the ostinato loop, which in turn then slowly dissolves into ethereal silence.
3. The Desert [Digitmovies disc] This has a noticeable sudden fade-out of the male bass voices at the very end of the piece. Not much can be done about it, but I highlighted the last few seconds and did a slow linear fade-out, so that the tracks sudden fade-out is less noticeable.
4. The Meeting [Digitmovies disc]
5. The Gates of Sodom [Digitmovies disc]
5a. The Queens Court (my title) At this point I included the court dance that I lifted from the mono laserdisc, as I mentioned in my previous post. I did some mild stereo-processing, equalizing and fade-out on the third repeat. The results are not bad and, and while hardly CD quality, still listenable, if only to preserve another of Rózsas wonderful oriental dances that he seemed to conjure up so (seemingly) effortlessly.
6. Torture of Tamara [Digitmovies disc]
7. Lyre Music [Digitmovies disc] A little too loud I reduced the volume of the whole piece by 2 db.
8. The Queen's Favorite [BMG disc] OK, perhaps Im being an anal perfectionist, but a slightly abrupt entry was tamed by highlighting the first fraction of a second, and then applying either an exponential or a linear fade-in. Its a trick that Ive learned. Similarly for certain cues that have slightly abrupt fadeouts, I highlight the last fraction of a second, and then apply an exponential fade-out followed by a slight reverb; the results sound acoustically more natural.
9. The Jordan [Digitmovies disc]
10. The Chosen People [track 3 on the BMG disc where it is mistakenly labelled as The Jordan; same title error on the original 1963 RCA Victor LP]
11. Children's Game [Digitmovies disc] This piece is in three parts, a purely orchestral version of the cue, a clapping interlude, and a childrens choral version. The orchestral part (the first 45 seconds) does not appear in the film. At the 0:45 second mark, there are five sets of three claps (the scene in the film opens with children clapping), followed by a final clap at the 0:53 mark. That final clap is a placeholder, and should be edited out as on the film soundtrack, so that the clapping flows effortlessly into the childrens chorus. The original RCA Victor LP and the BMG CD reverse the three parts: the choral version first, then the claps and then the orchestral version and even there the placeholder clap is still edited out. My guess is that Rózsa recorded the cue in three parts in order to give the post-production editors a choice of chorus or no-chorus.
12. Price of Freedom [Digitmovies disc]
13. Astaroth's Defeat [Digitmovies disc]
14. Prayer [Digitmovies disc] These last three pieces should form one continuous piece. Overlap (and I mean overlap do not crossfade) the final chord of Price of Freedom with the beginning of Astaroths Defeat. While Rózsa recorded these two pieces in separate takes, they were meant to be joined by the music editor, and that is the way they appear in the film. Overlapping causes constructive wave interference, making the overlap slightly louder, so save your work and go back and highlight the overlap, then reduce it by 2 db. Just before the last chord of Astaroths Defeat fades, overlap the beginning of the Hebrew hallel Prayer. If you wish, you can still mark index points for the beginning of tracks 13 and 14, so that in playback you can access them directly with your remote control.
15. Answer to a Dream [Digitmovies disc] My note for track 8 above applies here.
16. The Dam [Digitmovies disc AND BMG disc] The BMG cue, while retaining the male chorus, has a more brittle, thinner sound quality; the Italian cue is more solid . As I noted in a previous post, I overlayed the choral cue on the BMG disc with its orchestral equivalent on the Digitmovies disc a perfect match, and the best of both worlds. The Answer to a Dream intro on the Digitmovies cue is not the same as the version that appears in the film, and I tamed its harshness with a slight trebling down.
17. Hand Reading [Digitmovies disc]
18. March of the Elamites [BMG disc] The lead-out bars repeat over and over and over in the film. Just for fun, I copied and pasted one of the lead-out bars 6 or 7 times. This piece reminds me of that swirling variation from Rózsas Theme and Variations that appeared in the old 50s Superman TV series.
19. The Queen's Bath [Digitmovies disc]
20. The Dam [Digitmovies disc] A purely orchestral version of The Dam appears here in the film, in a scene where Lot and an elder laughingly discuss the Sodomites mistaking the dam for a pagan temple to fertility. Delete the first 4.5 seconds of the Digitmovies cue (the Answer to a Dream intro).
21. Lot's Threat [Digitmovies disc]
22. River Pastorale [BMG disc]
23. Ildith's Fear [Digitmovies disc] These three cues should form one continuous piece. Overlap the final chord of Lot's Threat with the beginning of River Pastorale. As with tracks 12 and 13 above, these were meant to be joined by the music editor, and that is the way they appear in the film. And again, highlight the overlap and reduce it by 2 db. Just before River Pastorale fades, overlap the beginning Ildith's Fear. Again, if you wish, you can mark index points for the beginning of tracks 22 and 23.
24. Wedding [Digitmovies disc] Almost the same situation as Childrens Game. This cue has two parts; part 2 has a quicker tempo. The first note of part 2 should overlap with the last clap of part 1 at the 0:31 mark, to form an accelerando. Reduce the volume of the overlap by 2 db.
25. Farewell [Digitmovies disc]
26. Exodus [Digitmovies disc 2!] This is track 13 on disc TWO of the Digitmovies set! It underscores the exodus of the women and children from the Hebrew settlement across the Jordan River just before the battle between Lots men and the Elamites. Rózsa DID score the exodus of Lot and the Hebrews from Sodom just before its destruction with more solemn music, but that cue does not appear on any disc.
27. Decoy [Digitmovies disc]
28. Battle by the Dam [Digitmovies disc] I tamed the treble just slightly.
29. Victory March [Digitmovies disc] Ditto.
30. Welcome to Sodom [Digitmovies disc] A little too loud I reduced the volume of the whole piece by 2 db.
