My favorite recordings of Rozsa's work are the three volume set he did of film excerpts with the London Symphony. I have made cassette and CD copies of my records, and they always seem to accompany me whenever I am traveling with a cassette/cd player. The playing is superb, the excerpts are thrilling, and the recorded sound on the DG records is excellent. Perhaps someday, they will reappear on remastered CD, as planned several years ago.
I have also just acquired the Quandt recording of the Toccata. I found it in Berlin while on tour with the Utah Symphony in April, and just missed meeting Ludwig at the Philharmonie. Our sound check rehearsal butted up against the Berlin Phil's rehearsal, and Ludwig had just left the stage when I arrived. It is a terrific recording, by a wonderful cellist (Ludwig is the solo cellist of the Berlin Phil). I will also be interested in hearing the new recording by Gyorgy Deri.
