And is it a mere coincidence that those Bartok quartets and Montverdi operas I've always been meaning to explore -- you know, the tougher stuff that demands full attention -- have been sitting underneath the pile of movie scores for the last couple of years?

John, there's a whiff of snobbery lingering here. I try to give full attention to all the music I listen to, "movie" music included, and I certainly don't bemoan the "absolute" music I haven't bought as a result of the availability of film music as, frankly, I consider some of it inferior to the better film music--I've never been shy on that point. My own taste runs to lesser-known 20th century orchestral composers and in that area I've been well served lately by Naxos; there's never been such a proliferation of neglected composers available at cheaper prices. So I find my listening has actually become more adventurous.
