Mention of those two great American "thirds" -both, I feel, the most representative and typical as written by Messrs. Harris and Schuman, reminds me of other equally great Third Symphonies well worth investigating, as well as investing in. Try Morton Gould's (now on Albany); Randall Thompson's (Lenny Bernstein's Columbia recording is a classic); Howard Hanson's (I think better than his more famous Second); Walter Piston's; Aaron Copland's (of course!); and Ned Rorem's (on a superb Naxos disc, also containing his First and Second).

And farther afield, I frequently listen to Prokofiev's; Vaughan Williams's ("Pastoral"); Khachaturian's (a Riot!); Alan Rawsthorne's and William Alwyn's. All very worthy of a fair hearing, and all readily available on CD.

I am sure others can add to the list.
