Yes, I had forgotten Peter Mennin, another finely intense and most interesting American symphonist. (His "Moby Dick" is also good fun!) I'm not so sure of Virgil Thomson, whose various orchestral works, apart from the delightful film suites and "Filling Station", I find dry and far less notable. (A very colourful character, however!)

Most of the Americans we have mentioned so far, Bob, have not relied too much on the serial and atonal techniques, as far as I am aware. Some have dabbled-- so did Rozsa --but the Carter and Cage brigade, which I run a mile from, are a far cry from them.

Very unfortunately, over here, the main US composers played (and known about) are still Ives, Copland, Barber, Bernstein ....and Gershwin. When there are so many others, with seamless riches amongst them to explore, it seems such a shame and a waste.
