This rather expensive and time-consuming process is useful in improving the alignment of the old Technicolor separations. There are situations where the original camera negative separations suffer from shrunken perforations or worse yet if they're copies, some were actually shot out of alignment. We discovered this problem back when I worked at the now defunct Metrocolor film lab on the old MGM lot in Culver City. In some cases it turned out that a dunderhead lab tech forgot to register the separation copies which back then made them absolutely worthless.

I believe Warner Brothers developed the ultra resolution process.
