Also note that Ed's chief complaint concerns not criticism (i.e., interpretation and evaluation) but history. Not even history but trivia (the current whereabouts of a prop!). Now I certainly agree that a solid grasp of film history is essential to the interpretation of old movies. And I share a measure of skepticism for those would-be critics whose interpretations turn out to be grounded on insufficient historical data. Nevertheless, the fact remains that Kalinak (if it is indeed she whom we are talking about) has devoted a book and many articles and a career to discussing film and film music. And those are credentials that merit giving her a say.
