Basically, you can listen BUT NOT DOWNLOAD tons of music in every genre on a 'try before you buy' basis, by downloading the free software: https://www.spotify.com/en/ When I typed in a 'Miklos Rozsa' search, a few unusual gems turned up amongst the usuals, including the 'Danube Waves' CD and an interesting 'BBC Orchestra' (which one?) suite from 'Ben-Hur' that is based on the Prelude, Procession to Calvary, and Finale. How do we know that they are legally retailing the music and not infringing the copyright to their own benefit. I like to think that when I download for instance El Cid, that James will receive his cut out of it. On youtube it seems to be a free for all and virtually the whole CD has been put up by a contributor named Scoretracker. This is a blatant copyright infringement surely but its obvious. These other pay sites are not that obvious and I wonder, how do you identify the ones that are above board or should we just not care?

Posts: 273 (06/09/09 09:00:34) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I had not heard of Spotify before, but doing a spot of research (i.e. Googling) it seems that legitimacy of the site had been in doubt until very recently when the Performing Right Society reached an agreement on payment of royalties to the artists etc. YouTube is, of course, awash with illegal videos and music. You can be fairly sure that almost any complete film or CD on the site is unauthorised. YouTube will remove copyrighted material but the copyright owner has to make the application for removal. If nothing is done about all this illegal material then eventually no-one will find it profitable to issue DVDs and CDs which have only a minority interest. Spotify doesn't permit download, and as far as I can see, the sound quality of the music is very high in terms of compression. It would indeed be possible with the right software to copy from soundcard to CDR of course and so obtain whole albums thus, which is of course illegal. It's intended for the likes of work computers etc. where one listens at the computer. You don't buy anything, just streaming of whole albums. So you can't really compare it to download/pay sites, nor to YouTube where sound quality is invariably quite bad. Some poster has taken the entire Varese 'Fedora' CD and planted it on YouTube. I wonder that James Fitzpatrick hasn't complained to YouTube, but, then again, in some cases these clips entice folk to buy the actual albums.

If that's not selling music I don't know what is. Secondly with vitually the whole CD El Cid being listenable on Youtube it's hardly is an encouragement to buy in my opinion.

The 'subscription fees' are for those who don't want adverts. After every 4 tracks you play or so, there is a short advert. If you tolerate this, you pay nothing. As regards the El Cid, you'd need to take that up with whoever posted it, but even if you have the software and are then prepared to write it to CD, you can only listen to it in inferior sound on your computer. PS ... Spotify is an excellent resource in some ways and makes research easier... if you want, say Beethoven's fifth, or maybe some obscure piece, just type it in the excellent search feature and a whole page of these comes up, and will play consecutively if you wish. Easier to then make choices to buy a CD SOMEWHERE ELSE. For example I just played back-to-back about 30 versions of the 'Gaudete' Christmas carol from different albums. No trawling, no hunting. So it would pay for a record company or artist to have his stuff up there in terms of competitiveness. You can see what's good quickly. Last Edited By: William D McCrum 06/10/09 03:02:43. Personally I think it essential to provide generous samples for promotion nowadays. What concerns me is the fact that these download and listen sites will actually discourage the new recordings rather than stimulate them unless the producer stands to benefit as well.

Extreme example: Last week, you could find on YouTube large portions of John Williams's new Viola Concerto -- just a few days after the Boston premiere! Somebody had been aiming his cell-phone camera through the whole piece. Maybe it's still up. I declined to listen, not out of ethical concerns but because I want my first experience of this this music to come under more favorable conditions. I am rather touched that Williams, like Rozsa, has chosen the viola for a major work of his maturity. This is not to minimize the ethical concern. I don't understand how so much copyrighted material is routinely posted on YouTube. It may be that the low-res files are noncompetitive and that the publicity actually benefits the creators and owners. But you cannot simply assume that. Many issues need to be addressed in this area. Intellectual property lawyers have a rosy future. (Remember Ken Sutak? That's his field.)
