Another Violin Concerto on CD! |
Lead | |
|
Just been made aware (by my Brother!) of the release of another new version of MR's Violin Concerto on the Cambridgeshire-based label, Orchid Classics. The
performer - who actually started the label himself in 2005 - is Matthew Trusler, with the Dusseldorfer Symphonica under Shinozaki. It is paired with the
Korngold concerto and some shorter works by Benjamin and others.
A surprise to me, this one; I hope it is successful and well received. |

Thanks, Alan. This truly is a surprise. How did it get past even Hank, who usually finds out everything? I got so excited I decided to actually DOWNLOAD IT
(since its 320kps and DRM-free) but I'll probably buy the actual CD eventually anyway! I'll let you know how the download comes out after it's
finished (kinda slow on my computer!).

A surprise but a nice one. I spend hours searching the net for just this kind of thing but with the concerts in Spain etc I have been a bit lax over the last
few weeks. It seems Mr Trusler has never heard of the Rozsa society either. It surprises me that no one had any prior knowledge of this recording. Sometimes
the artist will let someone in the Rozsa society know. It makes sense really.
The audio samples sound very good. He seems to have caught the Rozsa sound very well.

You don't say whether you've apprised Mr Trusler of the Society's existence.
If not, I just have. When and if I receive a reply, I'll post it here. |

I see also in Italy and in all the world that the young musicians for the music of violino, viola and all the music for arcs play often the Rozsa's works.
And many of these musicians love Rozsa. Regardless by the many concert programme of each musician and the many greats composers of works classic, Rozsa and his
works classic are a reference in the world of the classic and for the young musicians. Rozsa especially for the music with arcs is a big reference, if love and
play the arcs inevitably will play also the Rozsa's work

Fun with downloads! | ||
|
I registered myself at Classics Online and proceeded to download the album. I'm not a fan of downloads but I figured this was 320kps (not lossless but
sufficient quality) and it would get me the disc right away (immediate gratification, anyone?). I thought everything went smoothly until I tried to burn a CD
and realized that the first movement of the Rozsa was missing! Turns out it went into a different folder and, for whatever reason, my CD burning sotware could
not recognize it. I contacted Classics Online and they sent me the track separately - but it took them 3 days to respond! So much for instant gratification!
Now I'm trying to figure out if and how I can download any paperwork, cover or tray card. I've contacted them with that question - so stay tuned.
And the recording? I've only heard it twice so far, so detailed comment would be unfair, but this young guy can play the fiddle! I also noticed that the conductor (probably with help from the engineer) brings out little orchestral details that we haven't always noticed much on other discs. It seems that it will be a performance with staying power - and who would have expected 15 years or so ago that we would have FIVE outstanding versions of the work to pick from? (Although why pick? Every dedicated Rozsaphile will love them all!)

ONE ESPECIALLY NOTABLE VIOLINIST STILL NOT HEARD FROM
|
Though we have what now seems like a profusion of performances to choose from (led, of course, by the venerable Heifetz, for whom it was written), I still
think it unfortunate and puzzling that Perlman has not performed the Rózsa Concerto (especially since he did the Korngold years ago).
Does he not like it? Is he afraid of it?

Download update | ||
|
Alas, I have sent FOUR emails to ClassicsOnline's customer service asking about booklet notes and ALL FOUR of them have been returned! Each one bore the
same error message: "Sorry, I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1) I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue
too long." This is not making me an enthusiast of downloading!! I knew I would end up ordering a "hard copy" of the CD anyway. I'm still
glad to have the performance already though - it's wonderful!

Reading the booklet liner notes of this new CD I startet to laugh loudly at this line: "...Rózsa locked himself in a splendid villa in Italy..."
His "villa" was so tiny and modest, even paltry - a place only to compose classic works:

Rozsa and S. Margherita Ligure

www.jsebestyen.org/rozsa.html
www.musicainvillaeziopiola.org/rozsa.html (musical Circle of S.Margherita Page dedicated to Rozsa for his Centenry's birth) Rozsa discovered S. Margherita Ligure I suppose around 1970. Rozsa loved S. Margherita, here wrote his autobiography and here find inspirations for write different work classic. This is true but this truth perhaps in the time was expanded because of course Rozsa wrote also elsewere. (excluding his MGM's office preferring his home) Also Sir William Walton loved the Italian sea, in this case the Ischia's island

I finally contacted ClassicsOnline through the "Contact Us" button rather than customer service. They replied fairly quickly this time, saying that
the notes weren't available but that they were "working with" the label and would let me know if they became available in the future. Maybe I
haven't been missing much, but I still need them before I add the disc to the discography. Can someone who already has it send me recording dates and
producer(s) names(s)?
Thanks for that link, Goldenage. I'd never seen that picture on the top. I could imagine Rozsa humming "I Want to Be a Sailor" while he stood there |

A fiddling supremo.......

Yes, the disc was recorded in June 2008 at Dusseldorf Tonhalle; the producer was Jeremy Hayes. Engineer was Patrick Allen and the disc is pretty fantastic!
This player is one hell of a talent and his interpretation of MR's work a delight. More spacious than Heifetz's (whose is not?).....but anything lost in the older maestro's now-definitive version is amply made up in a warmly sensitive and seductive performance. I enjoyed it a lot, and the coupling of Korngold's is equally lovely. Mr. Trusler has a firm yet most sensitive touch and an obvious love of the more romantic repertoire, if this EWK concerto is anything to go by. Even the filler lollipops (Estrillita; Jamaican Rhumba, etc.) made for delightful encores. Recording sounds really spectacular and I agree with Frank that any true Rozsa fan couldn't surely resist this one. So glad my brother alerted this very special release to me!! |

Thanks for those details, Alan. I'll get it added to the discography soon. It truly is a wonderful performance - and it seems pretty significant that a
young and (in the grand scheme of things) unknown artist should choose to make his mark with these two works. Just another sign that we have all bet on a
winning horse!
Craig Spaulding at SAE says the disc won't be officially released in the U.S. until "early 2010." He will carry it then, and we can spend the intervening months exploring the marvels of the FSM box! |

As Frank DeWald says the Trusler's choice of play Rozsa and Korngold music have many important aspects. The possibility to have news versions of these
masterpieces and for make this need great preparation and also a little courage because the comparisons with the previous versions are inevitable, but Trusler
only for his choose (and of course for the result) has already win. And more important have and give the possibility thanks to a young musician to do
rediscover and appreciate the Rozsa/Kornglod's works both to all emerging musicians both to the persons for the news generations and this is very good for
discover and/or rediscover composers as Rozsa and Korngold

here a future projects and CD of Trusler, this is good because if Trusler has already play a Rozsa's work, this indicates that Rozsa is one of composers
and musics that he prefers, and I think that there are many possibility that in the future Trusler can choose other Rozsa's works, seen his hard work and
his effort

Mellor mention in the Mail....
|
I see that politician and self-confessed CD amasser, David Mellor has praised this disc in the London Daily Mail on 18th October. He speaks quite highly of
this violinist and that the CD is well planned, with the main coupling to the Korngold, "by Miklos Rosza (sic), another fine composer who wowed
Hollywood........Trusler plays the almost forgotten Rosza with great fire and passion and, for that alone, this is an essential purchase."
