I am learning this piece but the printed music (Breitkopf and Hartel) is extremely different from the version on disc recorded under his supervision. Does
anyone know if the revised version is available somehow?

That's very interesting. Rozsa often revised and tightened his music, and he generally suppressed the original versions. I always assumed that B&H
cooperated in this regard. For example, the Theme, Variations, and Finale, Opus 13, of 1933 (Rozsa's first great orchestral success) was heavily revised in
the early 1940s, and all subsequent performances and recordings, starting in 1943, seem to have used the revised score. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the BBC
Welsh Orchestra broadcast a performance of the original version a few years ago. I can only assume that this was an accident and that the old score had just
turned up unrecognized in some archive. What does Breitkopf have to say on the matter? (The TV&F had a different publisher.)
I must admit to great curiosity about the original. None of us has ever heard it, and there would be value in having it performed and documented. Please let us know what you discover and tell us about any performance plans. |

Well, we are playing it on 16th November but are not going to play the original version. For one reason, we planned the programme according to the length of
the piece on the recording, and the printed version is much longer. By the way, it may possibly not be the completely original version as it was published in
1939 and the piece was written in 1927. The recorded version does seem to have tightened the piece up, with the changes being, at first hearing, obvious
improvements, so it would be nice to be able to play his final version and not the original! We will probably play a compromise, with some cuts but not
including all the rewritten material, unless we can get hold of the revised parts!

We must also remember another performance of this early gem of a piece; it was at the West Norfolk Festival back in September 2007, at All Saints Church in the
quaint village of Stoke Ferry, as part of the MR centenary celebrations.
Performers on that occasion were Warren Zielinsky (vln), Morgan Goff (va) and Justin Pearson (cello) who, as I wrote in my report in PMS 64, were full of imagination, and with discerning and cultivated playing, especially in the finale which was very well received. The version they played was Op 1a, the revised one as recorded I am pretty sure. The other work of Rozsa's that was revised notably was the Concert Overture, renamed as the Overture to a Symphony Concert (somehow I never thought much of either title!!) The former was recorded on an early US Decca LP; the latter - shortened - revision on the fine RCA disc of some years later. All other versions I have heard either on disc or in concerts have stuck to the revision, most recently on the Chandos CD and at the Belgrade Festival concert in May 2008. (I do still much enjoy that old Decca LP however....!) NB: I note as a footnote to this that the same Mr. Zielinsky will play the Rozsa Violin Concerto next April 28th at London's St. Johns Smith Square; I also see that he has been actively involved performing on many soundtrack scores/discs in recent times, as well as giving concert recitals in several leading venues. I much look forward to hearing him in London once more, and hope many others in the area will also come along....... |
