This is an amazing find! Opportunities to hear Rozsa conduct music by other composers are all too rare, and although he would later record the
Smetana overture commercially, this is our only chance to hear him conduct Ravel ("Pavane for a Dead Princess") (An undated poster pictured in
"Double Life" advertises him conducting "Bolero" at the Bowl.). The other selections are accompaniments (to Lanza and Grayson) and
Barrymore's suite (which I haven't listened to yet in its entirety but I doubt it's a lost masterpiece!). It's interesting that this was billed
as "MGM" night because it took place less than 6 weeks after Rozsa signed his first contract with the studio! And I think there is a picture
somewhere of him standing in front of the poster for this concert - but I couldn't find it in "Double Life." Does anyone else recall it?
The sound on this transcription disc is quite decent too. Any professed Rozsaphile simply must listen to it. Thank you so much for finding it and posting the link here! Sometime, somewhere, it would be a fascinating project for someone to compile a list of Rozsa's conducting "repertoire" apart from his own music. Where would one even start to look? |

MIKLOS ROZSA and MARIO LANZA

About the MGM Night at the Hollywood Bowl I have find a reviews, (unfortunately there is a not very good opinion about the Rozsa's conduction) however see
the point number 12 and 13, Rozsa conducted "Thine Alone" and "Nessun Dorma" from Turadot of Puccini
www.rense.com/excursions/lanza/sam.htm In the Mario Lanza's box set (3 CDs) "THE MARIO LANZA COLLECTION" label RCA Victor (from the old LP) there is also the theme of Lygia from QUO VADIS singer Mario Lanza conducted by Ray Sinatra, maybe this is also a MGM's publicity for the movie QUO VADIS GREAT !!! I HAVE FIND ON YOUTUBE THE ORIGINAL AUDIO "Nessun Dorma" year 1948 Mario Lanza and Miklos Rozsa at the HOLLYWOOD BOWL www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOqTO9l6wps There is also the theme of Lygia (from QUO VADIS) in the Cd Label NAXOS Mario Lanza Because you're mine (music by Miklos Rozsa words by Webster and Paul Francis)

Good idea that Frank DeWALD says about the creation of a list about any Rozsa's music out of his own music. It's a good thing find new ideas, informations, curiosity for enrich the MRS website and for the joy of the members. When I see all your topics here, often I make research in the web for find something of new or particular about Rozsa, and I reflect about the right words or the key's words which can give results, find sosomething it's not easy but sometimes.... This is good for yourselves that we love Rozsa, but also for the MRS website and for share this with the other members. |

Spelling Rozsa | ||
|
It is easy to remember how to spell "Rozsa" ... the "zs" in his name is the opposite of the "sz" in "Liszt."

there are similarities between Miklos Rozsa and James Bond ?
|
Miklos Rozsa and James Bond have many secrets (this is the secret of their success)
both begin their career in London James Bond "you only live twice" Miklos Rozsa "double life" and when for the first time Korda met Rozsa if Korda asked "are you hungarian, What's your name" ? if Rozsa reply : "yes, my name is Rozsa, Miklos Rozsa" for me this name have a great effect. I think we all agree about this point. |

Lionel Barrymore was an excellent, accessible composer. You can hear part of one of his works in an entry in the Dr. Kildare series (I think it was Dr.
Kildare's Wedding Day).
