The late Dave Wishart would be very pleased about this, because one gets the feel that it was always a priority for him. He looked long and hard for the OST tapes.

One of James' first dilemmas (if he records in sequence) will be which of the two versions of the 'Overture' to fly with.

The Munich and Hamburg both use the OST original version, whilst the New Zealand and Prague have gone with the Nuremburg revision. The only difference is in the extension material of the main 'Montserrat' theme, where the original has a slightly different ending for the horns part. I prefer the revision, but I'll settle for either. I suppose you could compromise and, since that section is repeated twice in the Overture, use both!

Palmer also multiplied the trumpets from eight in parallel to twelve, as utilised in the Kunzel and Bernstein pieces but that's a choice.

I don't think anything else much deviates from the OST in all the recordings, except for editings of course. The ORIGINAL 'Entry of the Nobles' will be great, and a resequencing of all the bars in 'The Thirteen Knights' I suppose. There's so much that's never been even HEARD let alone re-recorded.

Another choice will be the 'Epilogue' which is far better in the orchestral version than in the 'Falcon and the Dove' or the NZ compromise. Maybe record both?

And how much, if any, of the Moorish drums and Mozarabic chants should be there?

Absolutely! I defy anyone to play the 'Quo Vadis?' 'Chariot Chase' at the speeds somehow found on the 10" and OST so I think a lot of problems arose from recording synchs as well, and tape and projection speeds along the line. The films often have stuff maybe a semitone higher than they really are, and this is what the anal-retents desire reproduced faithfully! "Third man along in the second violins .... you have to blow your nose on bar 16 ... it's on the master tapes ..."

You have to stand in awe of James' commitment here: if it's as good as 'Sherlock' no-one will complain. It's a big undertaking, and a brave one.

If you'd gone with 'Lawrence' I for one would've been happy too. When you get around to that, it'll sell well, cost less, and be the ONLY definitive COMPLETE representation around.... the one they'll point people to ... just as with 'Cid' of course.
