Just missed this | ||

by about thirty years! IU, as old timers will recall, is where the Society got rolling in 1973, where Mary and I got married (1974), and where MR visited for
a film studies conference (1977). The enormous music school boasted fielded five symphony orchestras, of which the IU Philharmonic (blending top students and
faculty) was the foremost. There were also six major opera productions every year (Parsifal was a specialty!), with cheap seats available in a
spectacular new state-of-the art theater. This should be good. I wish I could go back tonight.

What a pleasure to hear and see this outstanding performance live on the web (more or less - the video and audio both kept cutting out and stalling and
skipping around - but I don't have the fastest web connection in the world!). Thanks to Hank for alerting us about the webcast. The real thrill, however,
was to see all these impressionable young musicians being introduced to Rozsa - many of them no doubt for the first time - on such a high level. It is SO
important that the next generation of players and conductors know about this great music, and IU is, of course, one of our country's finest and most
prestigious schools (thus the ability to attract conductors such as Slatkin) and I'm sure many new Rozsaphiles were created by this experience!

Wonderful energetic playing. Lovely rendition I thought. I kept the stream on low and wasn't bothered with freezing. On the associated chat programme I was
able to enlighten some listeners about the composer of these "gorgeous' pieces. A few more converts hopefully and some more visitors to the site. PS
last news is they are going to put it up 'on demand' if they can secure rights.

Burlingame on Pacific Symphony American Composers Festival
|
Jon Burlingame, of Variety and the Film Music Society, has a piece in the Los Angeles Times today (Sunday 2/22) previewing this
Thursday's concert, which includes the "Parade of the Charioteers" and the Variations movement from the Sinfonia concertante. Excerpts:
"Hollywood composers of the generation of Korngold and Rózsa and Herrmann were stigmatized," explains festival artistic advisor Joseph Horowitz. "Only now can they receive a fair hearing as composers for film or for concert music." The program, to be given on the 26, 27th, and 29th at the Orange County Arts Center, includes concert and film scores by Rozsa, Herrmann, and Korngold as well as a premiere of James Newton Howard's first work for the concert hall -- a development that MR would surely have encouraged. Film Music Society members receive a discount. |

Zuckerman returns to the fold
|
Not to be overlooked on the "Newsbrief" section of the home page - the announcement that Pinchas Zuckerman will be playing the Sinfonia Concertante next season in Toronto: http://www.nac-cna.ca/en/whatson/results.cfm?EventID=5832. Zuckerman was, of course, the dedicatee of the Viola Concerto, but has tended to neglect the work (and Rozsa in general) since its premiere. The news that he is returning to play Rozsa (albeit a different work - and on a different instrument!) is good news indeed! |

In the pink-y | ||

Yes, I too noticed this incredible piece of news in the upcoming performances column.......absolutely amazing! What a turnaround by someone who, having so
successfully premiered the Viola Concerto exactly 25 years ago, promptly seemed to go on and forget all about it, let alone record it (which of course he
should and could have easily done). And so we were left thinking he really only did it as a sort of favour for his mentor, Gregor Piatigorsky..........well, it
has taken a long time to hopefully prove us all wrong.
One of the most brilliant violists/violinists of his time, Pinky (as he is known) might well feel it is time to put matters right; might he now even record a CD containing the Viola Concerto and the Double Concerto he is to play currently......? It's a great thought to conjur with, but sadly I feel it may go the same way as the disappearing rabbit......into oblivion! |
