String Quartet (no. 1?) on Saturday

Don't forget this performance on 4 April at the Museum of Biblical Art near Lincoln Center in New York. I'll be there
ALLSAR QUARTETCurious choice. MR described that quartet as his "anti-Quo Vadis" -- an astringent effort designed to wash out some of the Hollywood taste of the big movie score. The previous concert in this series made an even odder choice: Richard Einhorn's Voices of Light, designed to accompany (sort of) The Passion of Joan of Arc, which of course is not a biblical film at all. |

String Quartet at Museum of BIblical Art

I had never heard of the tiny Museum of Biblical Art, which exists inside the American Bible Society building near Lincoln Center. Thanks to Hank for the tip that led me to discover another of New York's hidden cultural resources. The building was closed on 4 April (a Saturday), but Gary Swartz and I were tipped off to seek special entry for the upstairs Museum. There some twenty music lovers--how had they heard of this concert?--gathered in one of the exhibition halls to sit in an informal semicircle facing the four chairs reserved for the Allsar Quartet's short program. This consisted of a waltz from Shostakovich's Jazz Suite of 1934, a flowing, lyrical piece by the young New York composer Ljova (who was present to explicate his music), and then Rózsa's Opus 22 Quartet. The four young women made a big sound in the small room. That's something we often forget about chamber music: when played, as intended, in intimate surroundings, such music is by no means always polite and retiring. The Opus 22 quartet, composed immediately after Quo Vadis as a kind palate cleanser, is my favorite of Rózsa's chamber scores: a lean and intensely dramatic piece. As played here in a small room and in stark contrast to a couple of lighter pieces, a really BIG piece of music. The four young women of the Allsar Quartet played with fire and gusto, if not the refinement to be found in the recorded versions of the more Pro Arte and Fleisch Quartets. Afterward we spoke with the Allsar's violist, Miranda Sielaff. The group is affiliated with the Museum and tries to develop appropriate programming for its various exhibitions. Naturally, it was impossible for them to perform the large-scale music of most biblical films. So the looked around for something practical. Rózsa was the obvious name, and the first quartet-does anybody ever perform the second?-seemed like a good choice, since it came during the period of the biblical scores. We thanked her for programming the work and asked if she knew of the Viola Concerto. Indeed, she did. She said it is becoming well known in viola circles (i.e., with teachers, who will urge the piece upon their students). She even mentioned a recent student performance at Yale that I was sorry to have missed. Afterward we enjoyed a brief tour of the gallery exhibit, which featured an extensive collection of poster art for biblical films, including quite a few European films that I had never even heard of. The famous, but infrequently seen Fabiola (1949) had some of the finest artwork. Has anybody seen this film? (Music by Enzo Masetti.) Some costumes are also on display. We saw Judah Ben-Hur's Roman party outfit with green cloak, Nina Foch's black gown from The Ten Commandments, scepters and ornaments used by both Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner in that film. The Museum is worth a visit. This exhibition runs into May. |

Gilad Karni at Newport | ||

Just a reminder about Gilad Karni's appearances at Newport. He plays the Rozsa Concerto (piano reduction) at The Elms on the 16th, following a chamber
concert at The Breakers on the 14th. Newport, of course, is a fabulous site -- the summer playground of the Gilded Age -- and this festival has a distinguished
history. I'm really sorry that I can't get up there this week.
Newport, RI, November 01, 2008-The Newport Music Festival 2009 celebrates its 41st season July 10-26, continuing the tradition of presenting unique chamber music programs, American debuts, world-class artists and special events in the Gilded Age "summer cottages" of Newport, Rhode Island. Entering his thirty-fifth season, Artistic Director Dr. Mark P. Malkovich, III researches and selects works from the 19th century chamber music, vocal repertoire and the Romantic-era piano literature, to create one of the most extraordinary festivals in the world. In its forty- year history, the Newport Music Festival has become celebrated for presenting over one hundred thirty artists and ensembles in their American debut.

I wouldn't recommend attending, as the concert as a whole will unfortunately be of a low quality....
Berkley Township Community Arts Alliance Band and Choir "Pops" Concert Central Regional High School, Bayville, New Jersey Saturday August 8th 7pm I run our community brass quintet and I'll be premiering two arrangements for the quintet at that concert, one a friend of mine has done of the Beatles song "Penny Lane" and one that I have done of Rozsa's prelude for the film The Lost Weekend. |

By low quality do you mean in the material offered ? Regardless of your recommendation, if I lived nearby I would be sure to attend any Rozsa performance,
especially an arrangement I had not heard before. You are to be commended for taking it on. Sure would love to hear it. Is there any chance that you might
record it and put it on youtube or on the Rozsa site?

I'd love to hear it ... maybe they have time for 'Arrius Helped to the Galley' in rehearsals ....
(Well, I know, but it's worth asking ....) |

Well...our "director" has never been schooled in music, his only qualification being assistant director for my old high school's marching band
for the past 14 years. (Not that he was even ever any good!) He has no idea how to rehearse the band, our membership is dwindling (and so is the talent) and he
pick lackluster material. But I'll digress...
My sister does own a macbook with a microphone, so I suppose I could get at least a crude recording of the arrangement done at a rehearsal of it. 'Arrius Helped to Galley' only needs three trumpets. I have two in my quintet, plus I can play it as well, so perhaps I can get an acoustic recording of it done! |
