At this point, the concerts are scheduled to take place in the city of Novi Sad, which is just slightly outside of the capital city of Belgrade. As I write this, Gilad Karni should be in Budapest again to begin rehearsing the Viola Concerto once more with the MAV orchestra. This time the conductor is Mariusz Smolij. . . . The disc is also expected to include the Notturno ungherese, Three Hungarian Sketches, and Hungarian Serenade-- all scheduled for recording this week.

You may recall that we initiated this thread on the very same day as we announced the Castro Theatre film series in San Francisco (1561 views/41 posts to date). That was a fine event. Steve Vertlieb did a commendable job of inspiring and promoting the series. There were some nice testimonials from public officials to honor the Rozsa centennial. The films were well chosen. Juliet Rozsa and Dan Robbins and Steve himself graced the series with their presence. The organist improvised some informal "overtures" based on the Rozsa themes. It all sounds wonderful. Believe me, if I had been on the West Coast, I would certainly have attended. But let's get real: it was a bunch of old movies. The Belgrade Philharmonic's Rozsa Festival is an event of a different magnitude -- something the world has never seen before. For three whole days, musicians will come together to make music. Gilad Karni will repeat the Viola Concerto (which he has recently recorded for Naxos). A large swath of MR compositions (film as well as concert music) will be performed. As one of the happy few who made the Budapest trip last year, I can only imagine that this is going to be bigger and better. Budapest offered one concert shoehorned into a tiny corner of the huge Spring Festival. In Belgrade we shall have three whole days of Rozsa. Obviously not everybody can make this trip. But if you are seriously thinking about it, please speak up now. There is a good chance that consolidated hotel arrangements can be made for the mutual benefit and economy of all.

There will likely be a film series, though it may take place some days before the concerts. There may also be a photographic exhibition in a Belgrade gallery. It is uncertain whether all the concerts will take place in Belgrade or in a festival location at nearby Novi Sad. Jill Arbetter has generously offered to help with arrival and transfer arrangements. To make this work, we need an early "show of hands" and a commitment to lodge together at a central location. Will any potential travelers please write to me directly? Many thanks.

You will be reading several accounts of that week in PMS 64. We're hoping for more, much more, of the same in Belgrade.

There should also be plenty of time for sightseeing, eating and drinking! He is the California-based Yair Samet, currently music director of the San Jose Youth Symphony and associate conductor of the San Jose Symphony. We're also expecting Hank Verryt from the Netherlands and Antonio Castillo Gomez from Spain. Unforseen circumstances may prevent Juliet Rozsa from attending, though we hope there may be some family representation. Can we hope to see some more of our European friends? I'm sure everyone is aware of the recent unrest in Belgrade. Things seem to have calmed down, and I'm sure that even those who cannot make the trip will join us in a prayer for peace in that troubled land.

I just learned that the Eurovision song contest, big in Europe, is taking place hard on the heels of the Rózsa festival concert series and also in Belgrade. This appears to have considerably influenced hotel availability and prices. A quick search on Google shows hotels in Belgrade at a premium and I couldn't find one at anywhere near a reasonable rate with rooms available. Regarding the recent unrest. It's been quiet and people have vented their disapproval so I wouldnt expect any problems there, especially in May which is still two months down the line. If by any remote chance it didn't seem secure I will divert to a Rózsa Violin Concerto performance in Trier (one of the oldest cities in Europe) near the German border with Luxembourg. To take place on the 15th May.

In my position of President of the Republic of Serbia I should like to express my appreciation of the fact that our country will be hosting this year's edition of the world's biggest music competition - the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. Thereby I'd like to invite all delegations, all participants and all the guests to come, this May, to Belgrade and get to know our capital, our country and our people. Posts: 1880 (04/13/08 14:58:35) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Above is the schedule as I've just had it from Jill Arbetter, who as we know, did so much to initiate the Budapest events of last year. We're disappointed, of course, that the planned three concerts have been reduced to one. The explanation that I've heard is rather complicated, having to do with the scheduling of Serbian elections and demands upon the orchestra's time for some official national functions. But what a monster concert this will be! Three major concertos in one evening??!! That's a terrific challenge for the orchestra and the audience and the poor conductor, who doesn't get to "star" in any of these pieces but must pull everything together in just a few days. I'm still glad to be going and looking forward to meeting old --and new-- friends in Belgrade.

Can't understand the prominence of his fallout with Hitchcock being relevent to the festival though. It seems out of place.
