Just perused the newly up and running CD Discography - the brainchild of Doug Raynes, and all I can say at this early stage is Congrats on a job very well done; easy to read, most exhaustive and looks great!

Too big! | ||

The main file should be broken up into smaller parts, like by the year. Currently the file is about 25 megabytes in size which is very large for a PDF file. I am trying to view the file at work (where the connection is very fast and my computer is up to date) and it is VERY slow going...

It's great that it's there.
I'm curious about the Berlin Philharmonic's CD of the 'Ben-Hur' orchestral suite: I didn't pick this up at the time. Is it good? |

Doug did a wonderful work! Congrats man!
I believe this is the version 1.0, so I guess we can offer suggestions for improvement: I enjoy the pdf format (since it's 'downloadable'), however html would be more lite, and could offer additional resources, like a pop up enlaged cover. So, both formats should be available. The discography is organized by release date. I think it's more easy to visualize a discography organized by year of the movie or opus. Compilations: here again, another point for the html format. If a disc has 8 different movies composed by MR, html can operate links, to avoid repetition. Bootlegs and private releases should be included. This discography is a reference work and I'm sure all readers will love additional info on rare stuff. The inclusion of boots doesn't means that MR Society endorses piracy and bucaneering. |

Announcing the Rozsa Film Music CD Discography | ||
|
We had intended to withhold the drum roll until we had done a little more debugging, but these days information will out!
* * * It gives me great pleasure to announce the debut of Doug Raynes's filmography-discography of Miklos Rozsa's film music in the CD era. Doug, you may recall was responsible for one of the two essential discographies of the LP era, published in Soundtrack! (June 1994). The other was, of course Ron Bohn's earlier discography in PMS. Doug's project was very fittingly conceived in Budapest last spring during our memorable Rozsa weekend. He set to work almost immediately, and we had several passes of editorial review. As fine as the work has turned out, it do not pretend to absolute completeness or finality. The beauty of online publication is that the document is capable of continuous revision and expansion. As Rozsa recordngs move into the composer's second century, the list is sure to expand. We will definitely keep this document up to date. The document (actually four separate files) is found at the MRS Web site (see link at top of this page). It is not yet linked to the word "Discography" at the top of the page but is highlighted in red in the main body of the home page. Please read Doug's introduction. Two separate but cross-referenced documents list the film scores and the compact discs. Someday, we would like to create a hyperlinked version, so that the user can immediately jump from one list to the other. For now, the files are PDF representations of ordinary text documents. The film list will refer you to all CDs that include music from a particular score. The more detailed CD list includes full data about each particular disc release. The CD list, as some users have been discovering, is a very large file. This is because Doug has taken the trouble to include visual images of all the disc covers. It may take some time to download this file, but we believe the results will be worth the trouble. You can always print the file for factual reference and come back to the online version whenever you wish to view the covers in detail. I'm sure that all of us will join in congratulating Doug for completing this tremendous project with such thoroughness and flair! |

A splendid resource; Doug should be commended for his immense effort in assembling such a comprehensive index.
Now we need one for Rózsa LPs. |

Doug, you did a great job. It's wonderful to view all those fabulous CD covers in one location, in an orderly presentation. Arranging the CDs according to release date allows expansion without the need to rearrange previous entries... very logical.

Quote: Why wait again for the on-line version? Just view your downloaded pdf file at 500%. There are a few lo-res covers, but most become totally legible when enlarged in the downloaded pdf file. |

Quote: Thats not the Berlin Philharmonic. Its the RIAS Youth Orchestra (Jugendorchester). This is their website: www.rjo-berlin.de/en/00_start.html Is it good? Well, to be honest its not the best ever recording of the BEN-HUR suite. The quieter, slower cues are OK but the orchestra tends to lose focus in the more demanding energetic sections; Rowing of the Galley Slaves for example tends to go all awry towards the hectic climax. Still, I have a soft spot for this CD, and its companion piece, Volume 1, partly because they were two of the earliest CDs I bought (they first came out as two double LP sets). Although not definitive performances, the orchestra plays with an obvious enthusiasm which is infectious. Sonics are also exceptional. The recordings were made at two live concerts which took place in 1984 and 1985 in Berlin and the CDs are complete with applause (and occasional background noises) and as such are almost unique. Im glad to say that BEN-HUR receives the most applause, with many Bravos. |

Just a silly question... Could this not easily be converted to a standard html file with low-res images? (Not complaining, just asking for something more maneuverable)

Thanks Doug for the Berlin info. 'looks like one to hunt down. The other one I missed was the Stanley Black CD because I thought the BH suite would be a re-issue of the LP Decca Phase-4. 'looks totally different though. By the time I found out, it was OOP.

Cool, thanks a bunch for the hard work and time it must have taken to amass this.
One thing though, wasn't there a release of Young Bess on Prometheus records? Edit: And a release on the same label of All The Brothers Were Valiant? Not putting down your list or anything like that, just pointing a couple of omissions out (that is, unless I missed them on the lists). Ian. |

It's probably an old story, but does anyone know why the German re-issue of the Spellbound/Jungle Book compilation has a still of Ingrid Bergman snogging Cary Grant instead of Gregory Peck? |

Re: Feedback | ||

Many thanks to everyone for taking the trouble to provide feedback on the discography, including suggestions for improvement. Additional comments are most welcome, including praise and brickbats!
As John has said, depending on available connection speed, it may take some time for the main CD file to download. I am sorry if this causes anyone problems but as an alternative there is now a low resolution html version of the main part of the discography viewable in the News pages on the Home page. Having high resolution graphics available has the advantage of making all the graphics readable when magnified. However, as Toms eagle eye has spotted, there are a few low resolution graphics which I have had to obtain from sources on the internet instead of using my own scans or those of other Society members. If anyone has scans of those CDs (they should be easily apparent) they are welcome to email them to me. The discography went through various format proposals and after discussions we agreed on a discography by CD release date order rather than the more traditional film chronological order for several reasons. The main problem with a chronological listing is that when it comes to compilation discs you end up with an untidy repetition of discs. I also wanted to do something different from the traditional chronological format and to make it attractive on a presentational level by including graphics. Having discs in release date order also provides an interesting historical overview, not readily available from other sources. Also, as George has said, the format makes for much easier updating! I did not include bootleg or unauthorized releases because by including them there would inevitably have been a suggestion that the Society was endorsing them. However, the benefit of the doubt has been given to some discs and this is, as many will be aware, a complicated issue due to differing international copyright laws. Young Bess and All the Brothers Were Valiant which have been mentioned, appear to have had the blessing of the composer prior to their release but they were not authorized by the copyright owners, Turner Entertainment Co. so they have not been included. |
