Quote: As for IVANHOE, thanks to Danny Robbins's reconstructed orchestrations, the Broughton-conducted sessions were about as faithful to the original MGM sessions as possible. I don't think that either reconstructor or conductor sought to "improve" what Rózsa originally wrought in 1952

Quote: We tend to think of reworkings as in the hack Mantovani/ Rose vein for musack albums, but what if composers/ orchestrators with lots of real clout and talent, like Zador were to rework Rozsa's ideas? Would this dilute the work, or give it new life? Bruno Nicolai re-did a whole album of Jarre's 'Dr. Zhivago' for example. I'm not speaking here of LeRoy Holmes-ish lightenings but re-interpretations by people who know. Herrmann reworked 'Julius Caesar' of course, and there were the reduced 'Ben-Hur' albums by 'Norman Maine' and 'Jean Baitzouroff'. Palmer of course made marginal changes with Rozsa's consent to many pieces.

Quote:Rozsa has stated quite pointedly that he writes a short score on 2 to 6 staves, indicating all harmonies and orchestrations, and that his music would sound the time, no matter who orchestrated

Quote:But 2 to 6 staves is minimal indeed for a full orchestral piece.
Quote:He may say 'violins' but how many for a particular passage?
Quote:If you dig out his orchestral long scores, he uses more staves than that.

Quote:Perhaps you are referring to cases where Rozsa wrote the long score himself without an intermediary short score?
