Quote:Too many damned close-up's. Another stinko musical from Jack L. Warner's former studio is "Camelot." Only Alfred Newman's efforts are appreciated by this viewer. And it's yet another movie all shot with far too many close-ups

Quote:Now there's a truly good musical from WB, but that was made a few years before JL sold the studio to Seven Arts in 1967. Later, WB was sold to Kinney, a company that started out as a chain of funeral parlors.
Quote:That reminds me of the small funeral home that for decades stood next to MGM's Thalberg administration building. Repeatedly the studio tried to buy it in order to close it down. You see it had a working crematory and late at night they'd burn corpses.

Quote:I'd agree that 'Lygia' is a great motif. I'm not sure I agree about the motivational analysis though. Taking Sienkiewicz (no, I'm not heading for my dictionary!) as the model, Lygia has more than a hormonal kick for Vinicius eventually, once she's put her feelings to the test, and Marcus, although initially inflamed erotically, develops one of those inspirational 'anima' devotions eventually, with Lygia as his muse and guide to truth. We can't count JC which has only the hint of a beautifully harmonised shade for Portia, or KoKs of course, so only BH is left to compare. The 'El Cid' love theme is also very evocative of course, but then so are 'Rowena', 'Rebecca', 'Guinevere', 'Elaine' .. and the 'Plymouth Ad' themes.

Quote:QUO VADIS most moving moments are those between the slave, Eunice, and Petronius, her master, and Rózsa's music for these moments is a big part of the reason, possibly because he manages to accentuate the contrast in the unlikely romance that develops between such dissimilar personalities.

Quote:I have heard the Cambria CD-1050, I think that sounds like crap. Yes there is music in there somewhere, but a Ray Fiola acetate restoration could just about sound better. It says stereo too, but it sounds like monaural.

Quote:By far the most interesting thing about the Eunice theme is its age and authenticity. But to say Rozsa wrote it is going too far.

Quote:I think it might be best to view the stinker too, just for the sake of the music, however I'm concerned it might upset me.
Quote:I really hope they get a knockout remaster out of those master tapes, that is without a doubt my primary concern. Having every last bit of recorded material comes second.
Quote:Damn those close face shots, I was just cussin out the TV the other day for that very reason.
